Campania is an essentially mountainous region that runs along the Tyrrhenian Sea and encompasses one of the most superb coastlines in all of Italy. Sister to some of Italy’s most famed islands, Ischia, Procida and Capri—home to the Imperial Villa. The Campania area is synonymous with the door to southern Italy. It extends through the vast five provinces of Napoli, Avellino, Benevento, Caserta and Salerno.
The climate in Campania is perfect for its lush vegetation. Mild winters and dry, hot summers are common here. The growing season here is one of the longest in Italy—producing some of the finest vegetables and fruits in the region.
Homes here offer both a warm, traditional ambiance mixed perfectly with modern luxuries. Country houses, villas, farm holidays and apartments offer a variety of choices for even the choosiest homebuyer. Perched along the coast or set in the lush countryside, Campania provides an alluring background for any home of choice.
Naples is by far one of the most celebrated areas in this region. Its beautiful bay setting contrasts its mammoth backdrop, Mount Vesuvius. Naples has always been a preferred retreat in Italy. From the marble-filled San Saero to the street of San Gregorio Armeno, where the local townspeople sell the famous Neapolitan figurines—Naples is a most impressive city with many unique interests to satisfy its visitors.
Positano is another very popular area within Campania. This small yet highly exclusive resort is placed high above the coastline and offers sensational views of the bougainvillaea and brightly painted homes. The beauty here draws multitudes of visitors every summer and has inspired a thousand picture cards. Campania’s Sorrento has attracted renowned artists for many years. It offers impressive views of the harbor and surrounding towns. The Museo Correale, a beautiful eighteenth century villa, contains a collection of paintings and arts that belong to the Correale family.
One cannot envision Campania without thinking of Capri, Italy’s most glamorous seaside town. For centuries, the cliffs and hillsides here have been home to some of the most luxurious seaside villas in all of Italy. Appreciated by Roman emperors and tourists alike, the landscapes here are break taking. The famous Faraglioni that emerge from the staggering coastline have been revered and has become Capri’s signature to the world.
Campania’s cuisine can be summed up in a Neapolitan dialect by the expression ‘frienno magnanno’—frying and eating. The meals here are prepared and immediately eaten. Cheese is one of the local’s specialties, especially mozzarella. This, combined with the famous small tomato, creates the most recognized Campanian meal, the pizza. Eaten flat on a plate with a fork and knife for an evening meal or folded into quarters and eaten as a sandwich for lunch—one cannot turn down the opportunity to taste the birthplace of this food icon. Made of the freshest margherita and topped with small, hand picked stewed tomatoes, mozzarella, extra-virgin olive oil and basil and then cooked to perfection in a brick oven—a taste of this delicacy will no doubt explain its quick rise to international popularity.
Campania has attracted visitors and those seeking a piece of its rich land and history for centuries. It offers a more exclusive, resort-style type of living combined with rich history and beautiful landscapes. This is the perfect Italian region for those who wish to enjoy the finer things in life while remaining reasonably undisturbed.
