Cefalu

Italy > Sicily > Palermo > Cefalu

Cefalù is an ancient city in the province of Palermo, in Sicily, Italy. It is located on the north coast between Palermo and Messina, has about 50,000 inhabitants and is one of the major touristic attractions in the region. It has Roman baths, an ancient cathedral, marvellous beaches in the zone and is a tranquil city full of history.

The Cathedral of Cefalù located in Piazza Duomo was built under the patronage of Roger II of Sicily, beginning in 1131. This style of Norman architecture would be more accurately called Sicilian Romanesque. Two strong matching towers flank the entrance porch, which has three arches (rebuilt ca 1400) corresponding to the three naves. A semi-circular apse is set into the east end wall. Its strengthening counterforts that work like buttresses, are shaped as paired columns to lighten their aspect. The mosaics are among the most famous in the world.
