Emilia Romagna is one of the most extensive regions of Italy that borders the Adriatic and the Po River. North to Tuscany and Umbria, Emilia Romagna is famous for the fascinating cities scattered along its plains. The large territory consists of nine provinces: Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia and Rimini.
The landscape here ranges from the wide plains south of the Po River to the mountains that border Tuscany, including the peak of Monte Cimone. The long coastline is quite popular with northern Europeans—especially around Rimini—and offers some of the most economical lodging in all of Italy.
Homes here are diverse and range from remodeled country farmhouses to more modern, newly built investment properties and vacation rentals. The coast is filled with budget hotels and inns, while further inland among the plains is home to many of the locals.
Bologna is by far one of most popular and well-known cities located in Emilia Romagna, with its famous porticoed streets and medieval palaces. Parma, another city situated here is appreciated for its world famous cheeses and hams and elaborate buildings.
The climate in and around Emilia Romagna is quite diverse and divided into three zones: In the plains, the winters are cold and foggy while the summers are hot and humid. Throughout the mountain areas, the winters are still cool and foggy yet the summers are somewhat cooler. In the costal area, the weather is typical of that of a Mediterranean seaside—with cold winds from the northeast and a relatively moderate climate.
The preferred cuisine of Emilia Romagna is laden with fat. From Parma’s salami— to hams and parmigiano. The cured ham of Parma, prosciutto, is rumored to be the sweetest hams in all of Italy. Some boast that the sweetness comes from the breeze out of the north that is said to provide ideal ventilation throughout the curing of the hams.
Emilia Romagna is a wonderful place to garden, dine, and live a life that is nearly as rich as the cuisine. Although its cities are a bit crowded, the area is one of Italy’s richest and most prosperous areas to live and vacation.
