Snippets of Articles Relating to San Benedetto Del Tronto Italy > Le Marche > Ascoli Piceno Ascoli-Piceno is located 25 km from the Adriatic Sea. The town lays at the confluence of Tronto River with Castellano Creek and is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Two natural parks are located on the north-western flank (Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini) and on the south (Parco Nazionale dei Monti della Laga). Ascoli is well connected by railway to the Adriatic coast and the city of San Benedetto del Tronto and by highway to Rome and Porto d'Ascoli.
Italy > Le Marche The regional capital is Ancona. The region is divided into four provinces: Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, all part of the ancient territory of Picenum, and Pesaro e Urbino which is composed of the traditionally separate provinces of Pesaro and Urbino, that were part of ancient Umbria. In 2004, a fifth province, the province of Fermo, was voted to come into being in 2009. The provinces of the Marche have distinct histories, largely owing to the geography of the region: except for the river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the land is hilly. In the 19th century a railroad from Bologna to Brindisi linked Le Marche along the coast-line of the entire territory, which otherwise had little communication north and south, owing to the mountainous nature of the country, except by rough roads over the passes.
Italy > Le Marche > Macerata The centro storico of Macerata is located on a hill between the Chiente and Potenza rivers. Together with the modern town, sprawling on the plain below, it has a population of about 41,000. There is a lift (elevator) connecting the two towns. It is solid but unostentatious, being built between the 1600s and 1900s. In the central Piazza della Libertą there is the Loggia dei Mercanti with two-tier arcades dating from the Renaissance.
