Urbino

Italy > Le Marche > Pesaro E Urbino > Urbino

Urbino is a city in the Marche in Italy, southwest of Pesaro, a World Heritage Site with a great cultural history during the Renaissance as the seat of Federico da Montefeltro. It has retained some of its picturesque medieval aspect on steep sloping ground, though tourists' carparks occupy the former fields below. Urbino is home to the University of Urbino, founded in 1564, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Urbino (see below). Its great urbanistic feature is the Palazzo Ducale, rebuilt by Luciano Laurana, an architect from Dalmatia.

Italy > Le Marche > Pesaro E Urbino > Fano
An ancient town of Umbria, it was known as Fanum Fortunae after a temple of Fortunae located there. Its first mention in history only dates from 49 BC, when Julius Caesar held it, along with Pisaurum and Ancona. Caesar Augustus established a colonia, and built a wall, some parts of which remain. Augustus also built an arch, in 2 AD, at the entrance to the town, and it is still standing. However, no remnants of the town's namesake temple have been uncovered, nor of the basilica we are told that Vitruvius built there.

Italy > Le Marche
In a traditional mezzadria system, under which products are equally divided between the owners and the cultivators of the land, the rather unproductive soil and difficult terrain was fairly highly cultivated. The port of Ancona was the only really good harbour, the other small harbours were used by fishing fleets: Le Marche furnished a large contingent of sailors to the Italian navy.
